What Full System Replacement Involves
Full HVAC replacement means removing the entire outdoor condenser and indoor coil or air handler and installing a matched replacement, rather than swapping just one failed component. Matching matters more than most homeowners realize. Every piece of split-system equipment, the condensing unit, the evaporator coil, and the air handler or furnace, is rated to work together at a specific combination that the manufacturer tests and certifies (an AHRI-matched system). Pair a new high-efficiency condenser with an old, mismatched coil and you lose a meaningful chunk of the rated efficiency, sometimes several SEER2 points, along with the warranty coverage that requires a matched system.
This is a common issue we run into in Georgetown, where a large share of the housing stock still runs original R-22 equipment installed before the 2010s. R-22 was phased out of production years ago, and the refrigerant that remains on the market has become expensive enough that recharging an aging R-22 system is often a worse financial decision than replacing it outright. Because newer equipment uses R-410A or the newer R-454B refrigerant, a straight coil swap onto an old condenser isn't possible. Replacement means changing out the full refrigerant circuit, including flushing or replacing the line set to remove old mineral oil residue that isn't compatible with the new refrigerant's synthetic oil.
Beyond refrigerant compatibility, replacement is the point where we check things a coil-only repair would never touch: electrical disconnect and breaker sizing against the new equipment's rated amperage, the condensate drain line and pan condition, and whether the existing pad or mounting has settled or cracked over the years, which is common on Georgetown's expansive clay soils. We also verify the duct system can support the new equipment's airflow requirements, since a higher-efficiency unit moving the wrong cfm through undersized ducts won't deliver its rated performance.
A typical replacement is scheduled as a single-day job for a standard split system, longer if duct modifications or electrical upgrades are needed. We remove and properly dispose of the old refrigerant per EPA requirements, install and commission the new matched system, and pull the required mechanical permit so the completed work is inspected and on record.
